|||Ladismith - Southern Cape detectives are investigating the death of a Ladismith woman, whose body was found in an open field near the town at the weekend.
The woman was identified as Gwendolene Opperman, who lived in the outlying township of Sakkiesbaai.
Southern Cape police spokesman Captain Malcolm Pojie said on Monday her body had been found on Saturday morning by a man on his way into the town from Sakkiesbaai.
“He made this gruesome discovery at 9.50am and immediately alerted police,” Pojie said.
“Police members found the body in an open field. It had multiple bruises and there were cuts to the face.”
The cause of death was unknown and a murder docket had been opened, Pojie said.
“An autopsy that will be conducted on Monday will probably shed more light on this death. The possibility that she could have been raped is also being investigated,” he added.
Preliminary investigations had shown that Opperman had last been seen at about 11pm on Friday night when she had visited a tavern.
No arrests had been made yet, Pojie said.
“We appeal to anyone with information to please contact the investigating officer, Detective Constable Susan de Jongh of the Ladismith detectives, at 028 551 8127, 079 893 9959 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.”
