Oudtshoorn - Two men were arrested for illegal possession of abalone (perlemoen) with an estimated street value of R700 000 in De Rust, Cape Town, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

They were arrested on Tuesday night after more than eight kilograms of abalone in 81 bags were found in their minibus taxi, Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

Police stopped and searched the minibus.

“Both the driver and his passenger jumped out of the vehicle as it stopped, ran off, jumped across a fence and disappeared into the dark, surrounding veld.”

The men, 23 and 26, were arrested after a chase. Police recovered the abalone and the vehicle.

The men will appear in the Oudtshoorn Magistrate's Court on Thursday. - Sapa
