|||CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance welcomed Prof Cyril Karabus's return to South Africa on Friday.
“After much uncertainty and delays over the last few weeks, we are sure it is a huge relief for his family and friends to see him firmly back on South African soil,” MP Ian Davidson said.
He commended the international relations and co-operation department for its help in bringing him home.
The 78-year-old touched down at Cape Town International Airport just before noon on Friday looking exhausted, but relieved, after his long flight and nine-month-long detention in the United Arab Emirates.
The Cape Chamber of Commerce commended lawyer Michael Bagraim, its former president, for the legal help he gave Karabus.
“Michael has been working tirelessly to help the professor reunite with his family. It is indicative of Michael's passion and deep caring for people that we are able to see Prof Karabus return,” chamber president Fred Jacobs said.
“We are immensely proud of Michael and believe he deserves to be recognised for his accomplishment. This is indeed a happy day for Cape Town and two of its finest sons.” - Sapa
