Western Cape police found themselves engaged in a gun fight after following a “suspicious” vehicle in Nyanga.
|||Cape Town - A gang shot wildly at the police in Nyanga before fleeing on foot, Western Cape police said on Thursday.
Captain Frederick van Wyk said a public order policing unit saw a “suspicious” Toyota Corolla near Amsterdam Road on Wednesday afternoon and decided to pursue the vehicle.
Van Wyk said a chase ensued in the Browns Farm area.
When the vehicle stopped, five men jumped out and opened fire on the police, who returned fire. The group fled between the shacks.
“An R-5 rifle was dropped by one of the suspects as he was running and it was seized, as well as a Toyota Corolla which was positively stolen on a Bellville case earlier this month,” said Van Wyk.
No damages or injuries were reported.
